Interviews with NYC's Indie Theatre Directors

Eating Theatre

Back in the Saddle!

This month I get to direct a piece for the group, “Eating Theatre.”

Eating Theatre

Eating Theatre is a site-specific theatre group that performs restaurant-related plays IN a restaurant! It was created by Erica Silberman and Abigail Zealey Bess.

The piece I’m directing is called What I Came For and is written by Alice O’Neill. I’m very happy with the script – it’s well-written, funny and poignant without any sappiness. And the concept of directing a piece that is set in and amongst the audience is intriguing to me. A lot of shows that I’ve directed have played with this concept – in Picasso at the Lapin Agile, audience members sat in booths on the stage, in Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are Dead, the actors moved around on scaffolding behind the audience – but I’ve never had a play set within the audience. I am excited about the opportunities!

The other play is called A More Perfect Date, and is written by Nandita Shenoy. It is being directed by Andrew Pang. I’ve read the script and it’s going to be wonderful as well!

There are only three performances, two on September 22nd, and one on September 23rd. They take place at Cranky’s Cafe, in Long Island City [yes, yes, you have to leave Manhattan – O.M.G!] which has some of the most scrumptious food I’ve ever eaten! And that’s not hyperbole – they even make salad taste special! The cost for the play is $15 and the cost for dinner and/or drinks just depends on what you order (though you do have to get something!). Here’s the specifics on times:

Saturday, September 22nd: 6:45 seating for 7:30 show, 8:45 for 9:15 show
Sunday, September 22nd: 6:45 seating for 7:30 show

For reservations, send your info and the date/time you’d like to attend to eatingtheatre@gmail.com, or if you have questions, you can leave a comment below!

Thanks for listening/reading. I hope to see you all very soon!

Peace
Cat
